Simon Jordan slates prospective Bolton buyer Laurence Bassini: ‘He won’t have their best interests in mind – just ask Watford fans’

Simon Jordan says Bolton Wanderers’ prospective new buyer is EVEN WORSE than current owner Ken Anderson.

English businessman Laurence Bassini ‘won’t have Bolton’s best interests in mind’, according to the talkSPORT pundit, who added: ‘just ask Watford fans’.

Former Watford owner Bassini was revealed as the man set to save Bolton from impending liquidation during the club’s latest High Court hearing on Wednesday.

But the news has not been welcomed with open arms due to Bassini’s chequered history, in terms of both his personal finances and his ill-fated spell in charge at Vicarage Road, which lasted all of 13 months.

The 48-year-old has TWICE been declared bankrupt and was banned from owning an EFL club for three years in 2013 for alleged financial misconduct.

He has since been cleared to return to football by the EFL and now looks set to take over at Bolton, having vowed to take the Trotters back to the Premier League.

But former Crystal Palace owner Jordan believes his arrival could be bad news for the in-trouble club.

“I know him, I dealt with him when I was trying to do a deal on Portsmouth in 2012,” he told talkSPORT host Jim White on Wednesday.

“And I’m sorry, but if Bolton fans think they’ve got a problem with Ken Anderson, they’re going to have a bigger problem with Laurence Bassini.

“It’s no surprise Ken has been keeping this under wraps, now that we know who it potentially is.

“I think Bolton fans deserve better than this. Everyone deserves an opportunity to rehabilitate and reform, but this is not a guy who is going to go into Bolton with their bests interests in mind – just ask Watford fans.

“I’ve dealt with him, I know what he was all about when we tried to a deal on Portsmouth.

“It’s not sour grapes, I’ve got no issue with what he is or isn’t.

“But, my God, if they [Bolton fans] think they’re out of the fire now, they’ve got no idea.”

Raul Jimenez: Wolves complete permanent signing of on-loan forward for club-record fee

Raul Jimenez has completed a permanent move to Wolves for a club-record fee, the Premier League side have confirmed.

Jimenez, the Mexico forward, has spent the season on loan at Molineux having joined on a year-long deal from Benfica last summer.

He has scored 15 goals in 37 games for Nuno’s side – also chipping in with three assists – as Wolves battle to finish seventh in the Premier League and also hope to book their place in the FA Cup final.

They take on Watford this weekend in the second semi-final, with the victor facing either Manchester City or Brighton in the Wembley showpiece.

Wolves had the option to sign Jimenez on a permanent basis written into their loan deal for the 27-year-old, and they are believed to have paid £32million to secure his signature.

Jimenez has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Midlands club.

He becomes Wanderers’ most expensive signing ever surpassing previous record holder Adama Traore, who joined the club last summer for £18million.

The forward said: “It’s a great honour for me to now be a permanent member of the team. I’m very happy for this permanent deal as I feel that being at Wolves suits me.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here, I enjoy playing in the pitch and, along with all my teammates, we try our best in all the matches to win.

“Since I’ve arrived here it’s all been so good. We’ve had some good moments, some bad moments; but the best ones have been so good and I’m very happy for that.”

Kevin Thelwell, the club’s sporting director, added: “The impact Raul has made during his short time at the club has been fantastic and we’re delighted that he’ll be part of the club’s long-term future.

“From the second he walked through the door, he settled straight into the group, and that reflects in his performance, with Raul providing assists and overall selfless performances, as well as obviously goals.

“His goals in the Premier League and FA Cup have been vital to this season’s success and we’re looking forward to seeing him contribute even more during what will be an exciting end to the season in both competitions.

“Raul’s permanent signing shows the ambition of this football club and the determination to make sure the future is an exciting one.”

Jimenez, who has made 71 appearances for Mexico, began his career with Club America in his homeland before moving to Europe in 2014 to join Atletico Madrid.

He left after a single season in Spain for Benfica, spending three years with the Portuguese outfit until completing his loan switch to Wolves last summer.

This is only the start for Reds: Klopp

MADRID • A first trophy in seven years for Liverpool, and a first win in seven finals for Jurgen Klopp.
The European Cup headed back to Anfield for the sixth time yesterday and their manager is confident there is much more to come, warning the rest of football's big boys that "this is still only the start".
A beaming Klopp revealed after Saturday's 2-0 Champions League final victory over Tottenham in Madrid that he had received a congratulatory phone call from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Three weeks ago, the Reds were denied a first English league title in 29 years by City, despite losing just once and racking up 97 points - the most by a team finishing second.
However, winning the Champions League has made up for disappointment in the Premier League, with Klopp admitting it was "maybe the best night of my life".
The German told BT Sport: "I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody.

  • No player has dribbled past Virgil van Dijk in his last 64 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say, 'So what? You didn't win anything'.
"I'm interested really in development, but I get it, we have to win things and so it's really important that people don't ask now all the time about not winning things.
"Now we won something, and we will carry on, we want to win things, 100 per cent."
Of his brief exchange with Guardiola, he said: "We promised each other already that we will kick our butts next year again. We will go for everything (next season) and we'll see if we get something."

  • This is the sixth Champions League or European Cup won by Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp also ended his run of six straight Cup final defeats with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

It was a sentiment shared by Virgil van Dijk, who was named Man of the Match. The Dutch defender said: "Obviously, we want to challenge for every trophy if possibl`e.
"We have the squad for it, but you've also seen it this year, you still have to do it and, hopefully, we can challenge City again next season for the title because I don't think they will go anywhere, so we won't go anywhere either."
Liverpool's celebrations moved to their home city yesterday as tens of thousands of fans lined the streets ahead of the team's trophy parade, which began in the suburbs at around 4pm (11pm Singapore time) and worked its way towards the city centre.
The Hodgetts family - dad Mark, 47, son Shane and daughter Keira, 16 - were in place holding special edition flags.
"We wanted to get tickets for Madrid but, obviously, this is the next best thing," said Mark Hodgetts.
"We just wanted to feel the atmosphere. We've been waiting so long - my daughter was only two when we last won it."

‘Literally worse than Alvaro Morata’ – Some Chelsea fans turn on Gonzalo Higuain as Maurizio Sarri gives update about striker’s future

Gonzalo Higuain’s Chelsea career hit a new low on Sunday as fans began to turn on the Argentine striker after his performance against Manchester United.

The Blues dealt a massive blow to United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League after claiming a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Former Chelsea star Juan Mata opened the scoring, before Marcos Alonso pounced on another David De Gea mistake.

Gonzalo Higuain has struggled during his Chelsea career

In truth, Maurizio Sarri’s side looked toothless in attack for the rest of the game largely due to the ineffectiveness of their on-loan Juventus striker.

Signed in January, the 31-year-old has scored just four goals since his move to west London and looked especially poor

Asked if Higuain would stay at Stamford Bridge, Sarri replied: “In theory, yes.

“It’s difficult to adapt to the Premier League. I think in the next season he will be able to score a lot.”

Should Chelsea wish to sign the former Real Madrid striker permanently, it will cost them €36million and extending his loan deal from Turin will cost €18million.

On Sunday, Sarri added: “For a striker it is difficult to get used to the Premier League. I remember Suarez at Liverpool in [his] first season only scored three goals, then 16, then 24.”

While it remains to be seen what the future holds for Higuain, the present does not inspire much optimism.

The striker was caught offside five times on Sunday – more than every other player combined and two more times than opposite number Romelu Lukaku.

In truth, since losing Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea have lacked a clinical goalscorer.

Alvaro Morata (who has also now at the Wanda Metropolitano) proved to be a poor imitation for the snarling Costa, while Michy Batshuayi has been shunted out on another loan.

And it seems time is starting to run out for Higuain, as Chelsea fans have started to lose patience. Check out what supporters have been saying below!

Vincent Kompany’s most crucial goals for Manchester City

Vincent Kompany was Manchester City’s hero once again after his 25-yard screamer gave his side a crucial 1-0 win over Leicester on Monday.

The winning goal means Pep Guardiola’s men are a point ahead of second-placed Liverpool with one game left to play.

Kompany powerfully headed past David de Gea in first-half stoppage to hand City a vital 1-0 win over title rivals Manchester United. The win took Roberto Mancini’s side ahead of United at the summit of the table on goal difference.

It meant City would need to win their two remaining games to get their hands on a first top-flight in 44 years, which they did thanks to Sergio Aguero’s 95th-minute winner against QPR on the final of the season.

But the club would not have been in that position if it was not for Kompany’s vital goal in the Manchester derby.

After convincingly beating Aston Villa four days earlier, City only needed to avoid defeat to West Ham on the final day of the campaign to win their second Premier League title in three years.

Samir Nasri opened the scoring before Kompany doubled their lead in the 49th minute to put the game to bed.

It was a routine win for Kompany and co, whose resolute defence saw West Ham fail to register a shot on target.

Kompany was called upon to lead his side out against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final last year. The Belgium international scored the second of three goals as City comfortably beat the Gunners.

The towering centre-half was named man-of-the-match for his commanding performance, which saw Guardiola win his first piece of silverware in England.

The game was starting to get edgy as James Maddison’s shot from range had just drifted wide. And with City struggling to create meaningful chances, Kompany came to the rescue. After driving forward with the ball, he unleashed an unstoppable shot which flew past Kasper Schmeichel in the 70th minute.

After widely celebrating his first goal in over a year with his team-mates, Kompany remained calm and composed at the back to ensure City held on for the win.

Kompany will be lifting his second successive Premier League title if the club beat 17th-placed Brighton on Sunday.

Football: Most football associations support 48-team World Cup in Qatar: Infantino

MARRAKECH (REUTERS) - Most football associations in the world back increasing the size of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams from 32, with some matches to be played in neighbouring countries, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said on Thursday (Jan 17).
Infantino told a news conference the Qataris were open to the larger format. Fifa would make a decision no later than June, once a feasibility study is over, he said.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt launched a diplomatic and trade boycott of Qatar in June 2017 that has complicated the prospect of sharing the tournament.
The countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.
"We are doing football not politics," Infantino said.
Fifa voted in 2017 to increase the size of the tournament to 48 teams starting from 2026 but, since then, Infantino has been considering the possibility of bringing the change forward to 2022.
"Most football association across the globe hope for opening up the World Cup to more teams," he said, lamenting that continental champions such as Cameroon, Chile and the United States were absent from last year's World Cup after failing to qualify.

"If it is possible to organise a 48-team World Cup in Qatar with some games in neighbouring countries, that will be great," he said.
Infantino said it was "premature" to speak of a planned joint bid from Spain, Portugal and Morocco for the 2030 World Cup, which would be the first time countries from different continents had applied to stage the tournament.
"I welcome all bids. The more the better," he said.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola thankful for goal-line technology as Citizens secure vital victory

Burnley 0-1 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola thankful for goal-line technology as Citizens secure vital victory

Pep Guardiola was thankful goal-line technology was available after Manchester City kept control of the Premier League title race by a matter of millimetres at Burnley.

It was 29 of them to be precise, as Sergio Aguero scored his 20th goal of the season with an effort that just crossed the line despite Matt Lowton’s nearly brilliant effort at keeping it out.

It was enough to settle a nervy encounter at Turf Moor, which City won 1-0, with Guardiola joking he was ‘trembling’ through the closing stages as City finished with four centre-halves on the pitch.

It was not a typical City performance, but Guardiola was able to celebrate in front of the travelling fans at full-time as his side moved one point clear of Liverpool with two games to play.

“We deserved to win, we created a lot of chances,” Guardiola said. “I’m so delighted for the way we controlled them.

“We came to the most typical English stadium and we didn’t concede one corner.”

Guardiola insisted it was not a complaint, but could not help but point to the pitch conditions, with Burnley choosing to leave the grass long and dry.

He did have cause to complain early in the second half when City were denied a penalty as David Silva’s shot struck Ashley Barnes firmly on the arm.

It is the sort of incident which VAR will correct from next season, but as far as City’s titles hopes are concerned, at least goal-line technology is now well established.

Sergio Aguero initially mis-hit Bernardo Silva’s through-ball, but his second attempt had the beating – just – of both Tom Heaton and Lowton.

“Without technology maybe it is not given,” Guardiola said. “There was a penalty not given but that is why I like (technology).

“Everything we have done over these two seasons, nobody has given us anything. We have won it. This is good.”

The goal means Aguero is now only the second player after Thierry Henry to score at least 20 Premier League goals in five consecutive seasons.

“He is a legend. He does that all the time, important goals,” Guardiola said, before quickly pivoting to his team’s achievements.

Guardiola heaped huge praise on Aguero after the game

“We have more than 20 points on United and Arsenal and Tottenham, it is incredible.

“I could not expect that, start of season or especially in winter time. We have won 12 games in a row. It is incredible.”

It will of course now be a disappointment if the title does not follow, but Guardiola feels certain of his side’s place in history following last season’s 100-point haul.

“In two seasons we have 192 points,” he said. “Maybe one team will again make 100 points in a season, but for the second one to make 92, 95, 98, it will not happen.”

Burnley finished defeated but defiant, with Sean Dyche proud of how his side made the reigning champions toil.

“I think it’s a compliment that I saw Pep Guardiola with my own eyes, and heard him, screaming, ‘Get it in the corner!'” he said.

“It just goes to show even the best have to do it, they have to see the game through with four centre-halves on the pitch. Sometimes they have to do it as well.”

With 40 points Burnley’s Premier League status is assured, something that was far from guaranteed around the turn of the year following a poor start.

“We have put such a big effort into the second half of the season,” Dyche said.

“People say it has been a poor season. It has been a fantastic season for us. This is Burnley. It’s not a walk in the park. Every season…finance, structure, trying to keep our players…every year is tough.

“The second half of the season, look at our goal tally, our points tally, look at our performance level – first class.”
