Leeds United 1-1 Aston Villa: Sheffield United promoted as Marcelo Bielsa lets visitors equalise in remarkable scenes

Leeds missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League as Marcelo Bielsa insisted that fair play was more important than a victory for his team on an extraordinary afternoon against Aston Villa at Elland Road.

A 1-1 draw meant Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United secured promotion, but Bielsa will draw praise for his actions after Mateusz Klich put the Whites in front in hugely controversial circumstances.

The home side played on as Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia lay injured and Klich turned the ball in. But after furious Villa protests and a mass melee, which included a red card for Villa defender Anwar El Ghazi, the visitors were allowed to walk in an equaliser and Albert Adomah obliged.

Leeds captain Pontus Jansson almost intervened to stop Adomah scoring, as he appeared to disagree with his manager’s decision.

The draw halted Villa’s 10-game winning run, and the sides could yet meet again in next month’s play-off final.

Villa served early warning of their excellent current form with Andre Green and Kodjia both heading narrowly off-target.

Leeds should have taken a ninth-minute lead though. Luke Ayling’s cross found its way to Jack Harrison in the penalty area and the winger mishit his shot from six yards.

Ahmed Elmohamady put in a timely block to deny Harrison at the far post soon after as Leeds began to hit their stride.

Adam Forshaw lashed a shot from the edge of the area over the crossbar, but Villa responded through John McGinn’s flicked header, which was well saved by Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Referee Stuart Attwell incensed the home crowd and the Leeds bench with several contentious decisions, with skipper Liam Cooper and later Bielsa both booked.

Stuart Dallas crashed a low shot wide after another spell of concerted Leeds pressure before the break, but the first half ended goalless.

Leeds picked up where they left off in the second period after injured defender Dallas and Harrison were replaced by Gaetano Berardi and Tyler Roberts.

Forshaw fired inches wide, while Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was wayward with a free-kick before Kodjia spurned a golden chance for Villa when he blazed over from inside the box.

Pablo Hernandez went close after trying his luck from 25 yards but both sides lacked composure with the goal in sight.

The game’s key talking point then occurred, with El Ghazi’s red card looking extremely harsh as replays suggested his elbow barely made contact with Leeds’ Patrick Bamford.

Leeds were unlucky not to snatch a winner in the closing stages as substitute Roberts’ shot was blocked before Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer brilliantly saved from Hernandez’s shot.

Football: Ten-man PSG humiliated at Lille, made to wait for title

LILLE, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Paris St Germain’s Ligue 1 title celebrations were delayed again when they suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat by second-placed Lille after being reduced to 10 men on Sunday (April 14).
The capital side, who would have clinched their eighth title by avoiding defeat, had Juan Bernat sent off before the break after the Spaniard had cancelled out Thomas Meunier’s early own goal.
The hosts made the most of their superiority after halftime with goals by Nicolas Pepe, Jonathan Bamba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jose Fonte, reducing the gap with the leaders to 17 points with six games remaining. Â
PSG, who already missed out on the opportunity of an early celebration when they drew at home to Racing Strasbourg last Sunday, will bag the title if they win their game in hand at Nantes on Wednesday.
It was PSG’s heaviest league defeat since Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) took over the club in 2011.
The game got off to an eventful start with Kylian Mbappe having two goals disallowed for offside in the first 15 minutes and PSG losing Thiago Silva to a muscle injury two weeks before the French Cup final against Stade Rennes.
Lille went ahead after Meunier diverted a Jonathan Ikone cross into his own goal in the seventh minute.  Four minutes later, Bernat volleyed home from Mbappe’s cross to equalise.
However, the Spanish full back was shown a straight red card shortly before the break when he brought down Pepe as the striker was rushing towards goal.
Christophe Galtier’s side went 2-1 up six minutes into the second half when Pepe beat the offside trap to score from close range.
Mbappe tormented the Lille defence but he was isolated up front and it was Lille who scored another, in the 65th when Bamba out-paced the defence and beat goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.  Magalhaes and Fonte sealed an emphatic win for Lille with a header each in the 72nd and 84th minutes, respectively.
Earlier, St Etienne moved up to fourth when Mathieu Debuchy’s double helped them thrash Girondins de Bordeaux 3-0 at home.  St Etienne have 53 points, three behind third-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.Â

Huddersfield relegated: Jan Siewert’s future in doubt after ‘fallout’ with players

Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert is facing the sack after falling out with his players and overseeing a record-equalling relegation from the Premier League, reports claim.

The Terriers’ fate was sealed with six games remaining when they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace on Saturday – and it is unclear whether Siewert will oversee next season’s Championship campaign.

Jan Siewert’s future is in doubt

The German manager, who replaced the popular David Wagner in January, has reportedly angered the club’s senior players with his hardline approach.

According to The Times, Siewert will hold talks with Huddersfield owner Dean Hoyle in the coming weeks and it is understood he will demand a total overhaul of the squad this summer.

Key players have been dropped without explanation and Siewert has reacted agressively to defeats, it is claimed, and Hoyle must decide whether to back the manager or the players.

Siewert was given a contract until June 2021, but since his appointment, the club have lost eight of their nine games – and only Ipswich (1994/95) and Derby (2007/08) have been relegated this quickly.

Nonetheless, the 36-year-old has started preparing for life in the Championship.

â€Å“I know the Championship will be coming so I can focus even more on it,” he said after the Palace defeat.

Toxic Scotland ‘not a great place to be’ for players or manager, says former Celtic star John Collins

The Scotland national team is ‘not a great environment’ for players or management staff due to the pressure on them to qualify for a major tournament, believes former international John Collins.

The ex-Celtic midfielder and coach joined Ally McCoist on Monday̢۪s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast to reflect on Scotland̢۪s dreadful start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

Alex McLeish’s men suffered perhaps the worst result in the nation’s history as they were beaten 3-0 in their opener against Kazakhstan – a team ranked 117th in the world – last week.

Alex McLeish’s Scotland side suffered humiliation in Kazakhstan

2

Alex McLeish’s Scotland side suffered humiliation in Kazakhstan

They followed that up by beating San Marino 2-0 on Sunday, but that did not relieve any of the pressure on McLeish as 3,000 travelling fans booed their boss after an unconvincing performance against the worst international side in world football.

McLeish has been urged to leave his post after Scotland̢۪s humiliation in Kazakhstan and their next round of fixtures in June, a double header with Cyprus and Belgium, could prove make-or-break for his future in charge.

Scotland are looking to qualify for their first major tournament in 20 years, since the 1998 World Cup in France – where Collins scored in their opening game against Brazil.

And the former midfielder believes the constant pressure to qualify had created a toxic atmosphere within the Scotland set-up.

Asked about the defeat to Kazakhstan, Collins said on Monday: â€Å“It was poor. I think they took the game too lightly, and when you do that the danger is you get turned over.

â€Å“We all thought after the game, oh Kazakhstan are quite a decent team, but then they go and get beat 4-0 by Russia, and that just makes it even worse.

â€Å“When some of our main players are injured, we don’t have to strength in depth. We can’t compete with the big boys, but we should still be able to compete with the Kazakhstans!

â€Å“It was an off day all round, I felt for the manager. Thank goodness we had San Marino after!

There is something not right in the Scotland camp

2

There is something not right in the Scotland camp

â€Å“I expect Alex will stay in charge but he’s going to be under a lot of pressure throughout the campaign after that shocking start.

â€Å“Everybody is under pressure. We’ve been 20 years without getting to a tournament, so as soon as qualifying starts the pressure is on the manager, the pressure is on the players and it’s not a great environment.

â€Å“As sure as you get a bad result, the players get slaughtered, the manager gets slaughtered. It’s not a great place to be sometimes.

â€Å“I don’t like saying it, and it’s not nice to say it about the players, but the standard has dropped.”

Focused Spurs bank on belief

Focused Spurs bank on belief

LONDON ̢ۢ Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says his players are "still in a dream" after reaching the Champions League semi-finals in dramatic fashion, but expects his side to be ready for today's crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City.
Spurs lost 4-3 in a classic encounter against City in Wednesday's quarter-final second leg, but went through on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
It was a gripping spectacle right until the final few minutes when City had a stoppage-time goal from Raheem Sterling, which would have sent them through, ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
"We are all tired after an amazing, crazy and unbelievable night," Pochettino told a news conference on Thursday. "It means a lot (to reach the semi-finals). We still haven't realised because we are still in a dream. We're still in a bubble.
"We can feel the happiness of our fans, also through the messages of family and friends.
"But, because we are so focused and busy preparing for Saturday, you do not allow yourself to live your reality. Our job is to be focused and concentrated and use all the tools to be ready for Saturday."

SELF-CONFIDENCE
To be in the position we are now is because we had the belief, the faith and trust in our quality. No one believed in November that we would be in this position in April. But we had the belief.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham Hotspur manager, on why his team have come this far.

Spurs, third in the league, return to the Etihad Stadium today as they hope to boost their chances of finishing in the top four for a fourth consecutive season.
"In 10 days to play three games... everybody thinks we know each other better now, but there is not much time to train or prepare," Pochettino added.
"We need to assess some players, that is the most important... to try to take the best decision and to provide the team with energy to be possible to fight for the three points."
Although the Argentinian admitted that his team were tired, there also came an insistence that all involved were "strong and with energy" and ready to go again.
That Spurs can still be spoken of in those terms at this stage of the season is remarkable, and not just because it busts the keyboard warriors' theory of this being a squad full of bottlers overseen by a fraud of a manager.
The bigger picture also comes into play, specifically the circumstances Pochettino and his men have overcome to find themselves at this captivating junction.
No new players arrived in the summer or in January and a stadium move that became so protracted it threatened to engulf everyone at the club in a fog of doom and gloom.
And, if that was not enough, star striker Harry Kane's ankle has kept giving way, striking again in the first leg against City and threatening to prove decisive in the second.
But Tottenham fought and found a way, as has been the case throughout the season, and it is this show of character Pochettino appeared almost compelled to speak about.
"To be in the position we are now is because we had the belief, the faith and trust in our quality," he said. "No one believed in November we would be in this position in April. But we had the belief.
"This is a massive example for us - how important it is never to give up, to always have faith and believe in yourself, your teammates, the club, the fans.
"This amazing history we are writing today will be a massive example for us in the future."

Manchester United news: Jesse Lingard photoshops himself into picture of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer celebrating 1999 Champions League goal

Jesse Lingard congratulated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on becoming Manchester United̢۪s permanent manager by hilariously photoshopping himself into a picture with him.

The 46-year-old signed a three-year deal to become Manchester United̢۪s permanent manager on Thursday after winning 14 of his 19 games in interim charge.

The original photo showed Solskjaer celebrating with his team-mates after scoring the winning goal in United̢۪s 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at the Nou Camp in 1999.

However, Lingard, who has been a regular starter when fit under the Norwegian, photoshopped himself into the snap on Twitter.

The winger said: â€Å“Very happy for the gaffer. We’re proud to play for him and look forward to this new exciting chapter in the club’s history #OleAtTheWheel.”

Solskjaer and Manchester United return to the Camp Nou to take on Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals next month.

The 1999 triumph proved to be the only Champions League trophy he would lift during his playing days.

And Solskjaer insists any trophy won as a United manager would eclipse those lifted as a player.

He said: â€Å“When I do leave here, if I can look back and have had success and lift trophies, I would be more happy than I was as a player. That’s a bigger achievement.

â€Å“To lift the Premier League trophy is what we expect, what we’re used to, what we have done so many times.

â€Å“It’s not like it’s going to happen overnight, catching 15, 16, 17 points on the top teams. I know we will be successful, but it’s about taking it step by step.”

Tottenham transfer news: Spurs hope to beat Everton to £30million signing of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes

Tottenham are preparing a £30million bid for Everton loan star Andre Gomes, according to reports.

The Barcelona midfielder has made 26 appearances since joining the Toffees on loan last summer.

And his performances have caught Tottenham̢۪s eye as the club prioritise a midfield signing in the summer transfer window.

The Telegraph claim Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to sanction a £30million move for Gomes.

The club̢۪s chief scout Steve Hitchen watched the Portugal midfielder in Everton̢۪s goalless draw at Anfield last month.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who could axe up to 12 players this summer, is believed to be an admirer of Gomes.

When asked about his Everton future, Gomes said: â€Å“To be honest, I try not to think about that.

â€Å“One thing football has given to me is teach me how to manage situations and how to enjoy it day by day.

â€Å“Every day is a new challenge and every weekend in the Premier League is a new challenge. So I try to think only in the present.

â€Å“If I think further ahead than that then I will probably lose my mind in some way.

â€Å“So I am trying to finish the season in the best way possible, give my best in every training session and in every game. We will see in the end.”
