Alisson Becker stats could see him break Liverpool record in Premier League clash against Newcastle

Twelve months is a long time in football.

Rewind to April 2018 and Liverpool had Loris Karius in goal after Simon Mignolet had struggled in the first half of the season. We all know how that worked out…

Jurgen Klopp moved to rectify his big problem between the sticks last summer by bringing in Alisson Becker from Roma in a €75m (£66.9m) deal.

Eyebrows were raised at the time at the size of the fee – a world record amount for a ‘keeper – but few would argue now that it hasn’t been money well spent.

Ably protected by Virgil van Dijk and co., Alisson has been outstanding for Liverpool in his debut season in English football.

The Brazilian has been ever-present in a title-chasing side that has conceded only 20 goals in 36 Premier League games this season, while he’s also been crucial to their run to the Champions League semi-finals.

And this weekend could well see the 26-year-old from Sao Paulo break a Liverpool record.

Should Newcastle fail to score against the Reds at St James’ Park on Saturday, Alisson will claim his 21st clean sheet of the Premier League season.

That would see him surpass Pepe Reina, who had 20 shutouts in both the 2005/06 and 2008/09 campaigns.

He’ll also have the final game of the season, at home to Wolves, to claim the record if he fails to do so against Newcastle.

Alisson's stats for Liverpool in 2018/19

Premier League

Appearances: 36

Goals conceded: 20

Clean sheets: 20

Saves: 70

Champions League

Appearances: 11

Goals conceded: 12

Clean sheets: 4

Saves: 33

“I’m fancying him to do it,” Reina, now with AC Milan, told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Although, he’s played more games than me because I think I played 32 or 33 games to complete 20 clean sheets and he’s played 36!

“But still it’s a great achievement. I’m looking forward to [him breaking the record]. If it’s Saturday against Newcastle, good.

“If it’s the last game of the league, even better if that means Liverpool is the Premier League champion.

“It’s the goalkeepers’ union as we say. We have mutual respect for each other and I admire him because he’s not just a goalkeeper, but a great goalkeeper in a club that I love.”

While claiming a club record would be a proud moment for Alisson, he’ll have his eyes on an ever bigger prize – the Premier League title.

Liverpool are battling Manchester City to take the crown, sitting a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side with two games left to play.

They are also in the hunt for the Champions League trophy, although face a huge task to qualify for the final after a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou in the first leg of their last four showdown this week.

Manchester City – Leicester (home, Monday May 6), Brighton (away, Sunday May 12)

And it’s not just former Liverpool goalkeepers singing Alisson’s praise, with current no.2 Mignolet hailing him as the best in the business.

“As a goalkeeper, you learn from the guys you work with,” he told the Mail. “He is Brazil n.o 1 ahead of  [Man City goalkeeper] Ederson. The main difference between the two is that Ali is probably better with his hands. He’s the most complete goalkeeper I’ve seen in my career. He is so calm.”

Arsenal starlet Ainsley Maitland-Niles is ‘next Gareth Bale’, Tony Cascarino says – ‘Sorry, Spurs fans’

Former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino has apologised to Tottenham fans for discovering the ‘next Gareth Bale’… who just happens to play for Arsenal.

Cascarino, in his latest Times column, claims 21-year-old Gunners starlet Ainsley Maitland-Niles is showing all the same kind of traits as Bale did when he first joined Spurs in 2007.

Maitland-Niles has established himself as a valuable player under Unai Emery this season

2

Maitland-Niles has established himself as a valuable player under Unai Emery this season

He is, as Cascarino writes, ‘a full-back who is not really a full-back’, as Bale was in his early career.

Eventually Bale moved higher and higher up the pitch, ending up as an all-out forward – the position in which he became world class.

Maitland-Niles is naturally a midfielder, and he’s only been forced to play in defence due to the injury to Hector Bellerin. Nonetheless, he has impressed at right-back, and has also shown his versatility by playing on the left side of defence on occasion this season.

Having developed as a player in a more advanced position, Maitland-Niles loves to get forward, making him the perfect option for a modern full-back.

And Cascarino did not hold back in his praise of the youngster.

“I saw the next Gareth Bale on Thursday,” he writes in the Times, “and he was wearing an Arsenal shirt.

“Sorry, Spurs fans.

“Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a full-back who is not really a full-back, just like Bale when he joined Tottenham in 2007. He has fierce pace and gets in great positions to score and create chances. He has improved hugely and has benefited from the injury to the first-choice right back Héctor Bellerín.

Bale began his career as a left-back before moving into an attacking position

2

Bale began his career as a left-back before moving into an attacking position

“He is more of a wing back but could easily play in midfield too.”

Cascarino did offer a warning to Maitland-Niles, however, concerning the injuries that may occur due to his style of play.

“After a few recent injuries,” he continued, “the worry is that his explosive style may make him injury-prone, like Bale.”

Arsenal pay price for dismal display

Arsenal pay price for dismal display

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Everton 1
Arsenal 0
LONDON ̢ۢ Just when it seemed Arsenal had discovered the resolve and momentum to propel themselves into next season's Champions League, they reverted to being, well, Arsenal.
The old flaws of recent years - weak defending and character in particular - returned at Goodison Park to dash Unai Emery's hopes of reclaiming third place and tighten their grip on a top-four finish.
Everton were more comfortable and deserving winners than yesterday's 1-0 scoreline suggests.
Phil Jagielka, a late inclusion in Marco Silva's starting line-up, pounced early to give the hosts a third consecutive Premier League victory and their second in successive home games against a member of the "Big Six".
The Portuguese manager's side were dynamic, industrious and resilient in every department, while Arsenal were found wanting on every score.
They have recorded only one away win in the league since November and, with only two of their remaining six matches at the Emirates Stadium, the biggest obstacle to their chances of rejoining the European elite is obvious.
Emery's latest attempt to remedy the sequence was as ineffectual as his team.

NULLIFYING THE GUNNERS
We got one goal, but could have had a few more. They're a very good team and have proved that all season, but it's nice to beat one of the so-called bigger boys. I'm not normally a match-winner, but it was good. They're the best goals, tap-ins from two or three yards out.
PHIL JAGIELKA, Everton's match-winner, savouring his goal.

BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE
It was a disappointing result. We played okay, but we didn't have many chances to score. We conceded an unlucky goal at the beginning of the game from a throw-in and it was difficult to play against a deep defence.
BERND LENO, Arsenal goalkeeper, lamenting his side's slow start to the game.

Jagielka was summoned into the starting line-up only minutes before kick-off after Michael Keane fell ill during the warm-up.
The 36-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign on the sidelines, with injury and heightened competition restricting him to only three league starts, but that was forgotten as he swept Everton into a lead their first-half display richly deserved.
The breakthrough reflected much of the opening 45 minutes - direct and effective by the hosts, weak and careless from the visitors.
Lucas Digne, who was also feeling the effects of a virus before kick-off, launched a long throw into the Arsenal penalty area that Jagielka won comfortably.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin won the second ball with a diving header that deflected back to the veteran defender and, onside and unmarked, Jagielka beat Bernd Leno with a close-range finish to become the oldest player at 36 to score in the league this season.
The early setback for Arsenal continued their record of conceding in every league game on the road this season, the only club in England's top-four divisions to do so.
But, while Everton were given the licence to dictate proceedings in the first half, they were also helped by Emery's 5-3-2 formation and his decision to omit Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the starting line-up.
The introduction of the duo at the start of the second half, and the switch to 4-3-3, was the manager's admission of his own mistakes.
The brittle defending and lack of movement were, however, entirely the responsibility of his players.
The Gunners improved as an attacking unit after the interval, but the Toffees were the brighter, stronger and more dangerous unit throughout.
Only their failure to land a second blow on Arsenal's glass jaw kept the contest alive longer than it should have been.

Trailing 3-0 from the opening encounter in Spain six days ago, the Reds' hopes of overcoming the Spanish giants on aggregate were alive, yet slim, at kick-off.

‘Danny Rose sent Matthijs De Ligt back to the Ajax academy’ – Fans hail Tottenham Hotspur star for sublime piece of skill

Matthijs De Ligt may well be the most promising footballer in world footballer at this very moment, but was given a brutal footballing education on Wednesday night.

The Ajax skipper was unable to help his slide slipping to a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Amsterdam as the north Londoners completed a sensational comeback.

Matthijs De Ligt was inconsolable at the full-time whistle

De Ligt, who is wanted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window, got the last touch on Lucas Moura’s goalbound effort and could only crumple to the floor as it beat Andre Onana.

But the writing was on the wall much earlier on in the night for the 19-year-old.

When out of position from an attacking free kick, the centre-back charged forward to tackle the England international.

But Rose had other ideas and calmly slotted the ball through the youngster’s legs as football players of every age and every level let out a collective groan in unison.

Not only was the starlet embarrassed in front of millions watching on the television, Rose went on to set up a crucial goal which helped Spurs complete the greatest Champions League comeback since Tuesday now.

You feel as though De Ligt will get his chance to compete for silverware throughout his career as the composed and cultured defender has defied his tender years to lead this young side all the way to the semi-finals.

But his pain was further exacerbated with a cruel nutmeg. Check out what fans had to say below!

Unai Emery will have to manoeuvre in the transfer market this summer if he wants to turn Arsenal into genuine title contenders next season.. Much depends on what competition the Gunners are in. Qualifying for the Champions League would certainly give the Spaniard a boost in terms of budget, but there should be a contigency plan in place in case it's Europa League football.
