Vincent Kompany: What Manchester City legend told team-mates in final message to squad after announcing departure

Vincent Kompany announced on Sunday he will leave Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Kompany, the Belgium defender, skippered his side to FA Cup success on Saturday evening to become the first ever captain to lift English football’s domestic treble.

City wanted to keep the 33-year-old at the Etihad with a fresh one-year contract offered, but he bows out in style to become player-manager of his first ever club, Anderlecht.

Kompany has one more appearance to make before his 11-year stay in Manchester comes to an end, with the legendary captain to be front and centre of City’s victory parade on Monday.

But he has already made his final address to his team-mates, and the Daily Mail report what Kompany said to the City squad in his last ever message as captain.

At a party at the Hilton London Wembley, City’s hotel for the weekend of the FA Cup final, Kompany told the players and their families: “The Champions League, it’s the only one we’re missing.”

Kompany arrived at City days before Sheikh Mansour completed his takeover of the club, but in the 11 years since they’ve never won the European Cup – or even reached the final.

City came closest in 2015/16 when they reached the semi-finals, before being knocked out by eventual winners Real Madrid following a couple of limp performances.

They’ve failed to make it past the quarter-finals in the three years since Pep Guardiola was appointed manager, and Kompany clearly wants his beloved team to end their European hoodoo and finally get their hands on the one trophy City chiefs want above all others.
