Manchester City transfer news: Bayern Munich president confirms interest in Germany ace Leroy Sane

Manchester City’s Leroy Sane is a transfer target for Bayern Munich this summer, the Bundesliga club’s president Uli Hoeness has confirmed.

The Premier League champions want the 23-year-old attacker to sign a new contract, and while an offer remains on the table that is yet to be signed.

And with uncertainty over Sane’s future it appears Bayern believe they could prize him away from England and back to Germany.

On Thursday, when asked if Bayern were keen on bringing Sane back to the Bundesliga, Hoeness replied: “Yes, we are dealing with that name at the moment.”

Bayern are looking for replacements for veteran duo Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, both of whom are leaving the club after Saturday’s German cup final against RB Leipzig.

Sane signed for City three years ago in a £37m deal from Schalke, playing a leading role in their first Premier League title triumph under Pep Guardiola in the 2017-18 campaign.

However, regular playing time has proved an issue for Sane this season – as City completed a unprecedented domestic treble.

Sane started 21 of City’s 38 Premier League game, making a 10 further appearances from the bench, but scored 10 league goals and six more in cup competitions.

Liverpool legend Terry McDermott suggests Reds DO NOT need to win a trophy this season to make their supporters proud

Terry McDermott believes Liverpool do not necessarily need to win a trophy this season to make their supporters proud.

The Reds have had a superb season, amassing their highest points total in Premier League history with two matches still to play, while also making it to the Champions League semi-finals.

Liverpool are in the hunt for the Premier League and Champions League this season

Liverpool are in the hunt for the Premier League and Champions League this season

However, there’s a real danger the club will not add to their silverware this campaign as the title race is still in Manchester City’s hands and a 3-0 defeat in their first leg against Barcelona leaves Liverpool with a mountain to climb at Anfield.

Failure to win a trophy could lead to questions surrounding manager Jurgen Klopp’s future given the club spent over £170million on recruiting new players last summer.

They will be out of the title race by the end of the weekend should they lose to Newcastle on Saturday night and City beat Leicester on Monday.

But McDermott, who won 16 trophies at Anfield as a player including five First Division titles and three European Cups, suggested that Liverpool fans are proud of how they’ve done this season regardless of whether they win anything or not.

McDermott believes Liverpool have already had a successful season

Speaking to Georgie Bingham and Tony Cascarino on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, McDermott, who also played for Newcastle said: “I’ve been to all the [Liverpool] home games and it’s a pleasure to watch them every week.

“They’ve been fantastic most games.

“If they don’t come away with anything then yes we’ll be disappointed but we’re just proud to see the club playing like that, seeing them play the football that they play.

“The players that they’ve got, they’ll always have a chance to score goals. Mane, Firmino and Salah you’re going to score goals.”

As well as their chances of winning the league, Liverpool’s Champions League hopes look pretty perilous following their heavy defeat at the Nou Camp.

McDermott voiced his dissatisfaction at the way former Barcelona and Everton striker Gary Lineker celebrated Lionel Messi’s second goal but then said Liverpool should not be written off just yet.

He added: “It’s disappointing because they didn’t deserve to be beaten anyway and I thought they played brilliantly on the night.

“Never scored which is unusual but if they can do that performance at Anfield you never know.

“I’m not going to say they’re going to win it but they’ve got a chance.”

European minnows want bigger portion of pie

ZURICH • For the 80 teams who qualify for the group stages of European club football, the season starts with a glitzy party at the draw ceremony in Monaco and ends with millions of extra euros in the bank.
But while those clubs cash in on the riches produced by the Champions League and, to a lesser extent, the Europa League, more than 600 top-tier clubs who fail to qualify have to feed off leftovers.
Amid widespread concern that the financial gap between Europe's elite clubs and the rest is still growing, Uefa is being asked by the continent's domestic leagues to alter the way it distributes the huge revenue from its competitions.
European Leagues, its umbrella organisation, says in a report that it wants the unlucky 600 to get a larger slice of the cake.
Uefa's club competitions are expected to rake in €3.25 billion (S$5.1 billion) this season but the manner in which that money is distributed has become increasingly contentious. The 32 Champions League teams will share €2.04 billion, with Europa League participants receiving €510 million.
Only 7.3 per cent (€237.5 million) will be distributed in so-called "solidarity payments" and split between the remaining 600 clubs.
The report, which has been sent to Uefa and the continent's 55 national associations, said this was down from 8.5 per cent in the previous cycle from 2015 to this year.

  • 20%

  • Solidarity payments may be increased from 7.3 per cent in the next cycle, 2021-24, to improve competitive balance.

"The financial gap between participating clubs and non-participating clubs is increasing, creating a negative effect on competitive balance," it warned, pointing out that the percentage was more relevant than absolute amounts.
The report proposed that the solidarity payments be increased to 20 per cent in the next cycle, which will cover the period 2021 to 2024.
Based on an estimated revenue of €3.3 billion a season, it said this would provide €660 million for those who missed out on European competition. Breaking down the figures further, it proposed that 3.5 per cent (€116 million) be distributed among clubs eliminated in qualifying rounds and 10 per cent (€330 million) to clubs who did not qualify at all.
The European leagues also want 6.5 per cent of total revenue to go into a new pillar which would be used to fund professional football development outside the top five countries.
Uefa is expected to decide on revenue distribution by the end of the season. Aleksander Ceferin, president of the governing body, has said his priority is to improve competitive balance.
But he also acknowledges that the big clubs are responsible for the lion's share of the revenue and has admitted it is a difficult subject.

No Liverpool players would get into Manchester City’s starting XI, claims Joleon Lescott

Joleon Lescott would not take any of Liverpool’s players in Manchester City’s current starting XI.

Liverpool are two points ahead of their rivals in a tense race for the Premier League title, but City have a game in hand.

There is no room for Van Dijk in Lescott’s combined Liverpool and Man City XI

Pep Guardiola’s men are still fighting on all fronts as they chase an unprecedented quadruple.

And Lescott, who twice won the league championship with City, claims he wouldn’t swap a single Liverpool player for anyone in his former club’s strongest line-up.

Virgil van Dijk would be the obvious choice – the Dutchman is the overwhelming favourite for this season’s personal accolades and many consider him to be one of the best centre-backs in world football.

Nonetheless, Lescott would stick with City defenders Aymeric Laporte and John Stones if given the choice.

He told SportingBet: “Both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will each be happy with their own team and their players suit their styles of football.

“I’m not sure I’d take a single one of Liverpool’s players for Man City’s team, but it’s fair to say both have put together great squads.

Laporte has impressed Lescott this season

Laporte has impressed Lescott this season

“From a Man City perspective, I have been very impressed with Aymeric Laporte this season, who has arguably made a similar impact to what Virgil Van Dijk has at Liverpool.”

And Lescott has also backed his former club to outlast Liverpool in the Premier League title race and retain their crown.

He added: “I expect Manchester City to go on to win the Premier League. It is interesting that they’ve been able to overtake Liverpool so quickly.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise that Man City have won the games they have, but rather that Liverpool have dropped points in recent weeks.

“They haven’t performed well in the games they should have done and Man City have been able to capitalise on that.

Lescott won the title with City

“Earlier on in the season, the title could have been Liverpool’s to lose but they threw the opportunity away with a bad run of games where they didn’t achieve what they should have done. It’s now in Manchester City’s hands and I don’t expect them to let it slip.

“Retaining the Premier League title will be Man City’s biggest achievement and to become the first side to do it since Sir Alex Ferguson retired from Manchester United is another camel off their backs in the city.”

Football: Chelsea's Willian to replace Neymar in Brazil's Copa America squad

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Chelsea's Willian will replace Neymar in Brazil's Copa America squad, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Friday (June 7), after the world's most expensive player was sidelined by injury.
Willian, 30, was a surprise choice as the country's media had tipped Real Madrid youngster Vinicius Junior and Tottenham's Lucas Moura as the front-runners to take the Paris Saint-Germain forward's place.
"In accordance with competition rules, CBF sent Conmebol the medical reports of Neymar's injury. After receiving permission, the player (Willian) was summoned," the CBF said in a statement.
Willian, who has played for Chelsea since 2013, represented Brazil at the last two World Cups and was a substitute in the Blues' 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Europa League final on May 29.
He has made 65 appearances for the Selecao with his last international match coming in November's friendly victory over Cameroon.
Neymar was ruled out of the Copa America after spraining his ankle during the 2-0 win over Qatar in a friendly on Wednesday, capping a nightmare year for the world's most expensive player who faces accusations of rape which he strongly denies.
A distraught-looking Neymar covered his face with his hands as he sat on the bench after hobbling from the field in the 20th minute.
PSG said on Thursday the star striker would be reassessed by the club's medics within "72 hours to define the rehabilitation process and recovery time for the player".

Tottenham news: Danny Rose urges Spurs to keep hold of Christian Eriksen, insisting he ‘trusts’ club to get a new contract sorted

Danny Rose has urged Tottenham to find a way to get Christian Eriksen a new contract, insisting he ‘trusts’ the club to get the deal done.

The 27-year-old has one year left on a contract that earns him a reported £70,000-a-week, but has been stalling on signing a new deal amidst interest from LaLiga giants Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have been strongly linked with the Dane and were reportedly weighing up a £100million bid to acquire his services at the turn of the year.

Getting Eriksen to sign a new deal could be vital to any hopes Spurs have of bringing silverware to the club as he has once again been crucial this season, racking up seven goals and 12 assists in 32 league matches.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed he is open to discussing a new deal and Rose hopes the club can persuade him to commit.
