Chelsea vs Arsenal: talkSPORT writers predict who will win the Europa League final

Chelsea and Arsenal make the 2,800-mile trip to Azerbaijan to battle it out for the Europa League final on Wednesday night.

The Baku showpiece offers a route into next season’s Champions League for the Gunners – and both managers will be hoping to end mixed debut seasons in England with a trophy.

Who will be victorious in Baku?

Who will be victorious in Baku?

The final takes place against a backdrop of controversy, with UEFA’s decision to host the final in Baku heavily scrutinised.

Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not travel to Azerbaijan due to fear over his safety, while thousands of tickets have been returned by both clubs due to the cost and logistics involved in the trip.

It promises to be an unusual occasion, with so few supporters in attendance, but so much remains at stake.

Chelsea have absentees of their own, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Antonio Rudiger all injured – and N’Golo Kante also looks set to miss out.

With all that said, our writers have made their predictions…

Sean O’Brien – Arsenal

Chelsea are missing, arguably, their three best players behind Eden Hazard. Rudiger will prove a particularly big miss against the pace of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Kante and Loftus-Cheek are the only midfielders who provide any sort of direct thrust – and the Blues risk losing the midfield battle without them.

Sarri’s side have a tendency to start slowly, and they also have less motivation than their opponents. Expect Emery’s men to race out of the blocks and grab an early goal.

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have too much for Chelsea

Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have too much for Chelsea

Joe Moore – Chelsea

Chelsea are extremely annoying. This is known. Even if their form is terrible, their key players playing badly and their manager is burning under the spotlight, they still find a way to win.

I reckon they will here, too. Arsenal have greatly improved under Unai Emery this season, but their defence is still not up to scratch.

Aubameyang and Lacazette may have something to say about it, but Chelsea may just edge this one.

Joe Coleman – Arsenal

Despite reaching two cup finals and securing a quite incredulous third-place finish in the Premier League, Maurizio Sarri’s job is somehow under threat.

The job he has done at Stamford Bridge seems to be completely unappreciated by the fans and the board and it is likely this will be both Eden Hazard and the Italian’s last game.

With such a sombre mood surrounding the Blues, expect to see Europa League specialist Unai Emery weave his magic in Baku once again.

Will this be a swan song for Hazard at Chelsea?

Will this be a swan song for Hazard at Chelsea?

Josh Fordham – Chelsea

The better of the two teams over the course of the season.

Eden Hazard will make the difference in what is likely to be his last game in a Blue shirt.

Jackson Cole – Arsenal

I’m going for Arsenal to triumph in Baku especially because manager Unai Emery is the Europa League specialist (winning it three years running as Sevilla boss).

Meanwhile, for all his good points, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri doesn’t actually have a winners’ medal in his entire career in football apart from individual accolades.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have been pure flames at points this season and Chelsea’s limited defence can be got at by the strikers.

N’Golo Kante’s possible absence could be crucial but if Eden Hazard is at his free-flowing best on what is likely to be his farewell Blues appearance, then my prediction of an Arsenal win will probably be wrong!

N’Golo Kante is a doubt for Chelsea

N’Golo Kante is a doubt for Chelsea

Oliver Dawney – Chelsea

The Blues in Baku have already secured Champions League football and I believe that will work in their favour.

Expect Hazard to dazzle in his last game for the club and be instrumental in the victory.

Daniel Sandford – Arsenal

Arsenal’s strike force will be too much for Chelsea. The pressure is off for the Blues after they finished third in the Premier League.

Strong support for 48 teams in Qatar but issues remain
DOHA ̢ۢ A "majority" of football federations support increasing the number of teams playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said in Doha on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference after a three-day Fifa summit, which was attended by more than 70 federations, he revealed that the plan enjoyed widespread backing from different associations, but admitted there were doubts about its "feasibility".
"We will see," Infantino said. "So far, of course the majority is in favour because 16 more teams can participate, not only means 16 more countries with World Cup fever, but also 50 or 60 more countries being able to dream."
A decision will be made in March at Fifa's next council meeting, after a feasibility study is completed.
The world football governing body has backed a 48-team tournament to become the norm from 2026, when the World Cup takes place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
But, with the 2022 host "open" to the idea of a 48-team tournament, Infantino is considering implementing the changes earlier.
He said: "Of course, the first partner with whom we are speaking to is the Qataris, the Qatar federation, the Qatari authorities."
However, any decision to extend the showpiece event would be beset by logistical and political problems.
The first World Cup to be held in the Middle East will take place over 28 days, not the usual 32 and, according to Infantino, the length of the tournament is set in stone.
Since the number of days cannot be changed, one option would be to host games across the region.
Yet that possibility seems remote as Qatar is at the centre of the worst diplomatic crisis to hit the Persian Gulf in years.
Since June last year, the country has been politically and economically isolated by its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
They have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism and being too close to Iran.
Doha has denied the charges, claiming its former allies are seeking to instigate a regime change and Infantino is well aware the embargo could prove problematic.
"Of course I am not that naive, not to know, not to read the news about what is going on. But we are in football, we are not in politics," he added.

Luther Blissett blasted Wolves striker Raul Jimenez for his celebration during their FA Cup semi-final against Watford.

The Mexican put Wolves 2-0 up at Wembley with a well-taken goal on 62 minutes and to celebrate he sported an orange mask in front of his adoring fans.

However, the only thing that was left on Jimenez’s face by the end of the game was egg as Watford brought it back to 2-2 before winning the game 3-2 after extra-time.

It means the Hornets will face Manchester City in the final on May 18, while Wolves’ very good cup run – which saw them beat the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United – came to an abrupt end.

Watford striker Troy Deeney mocked ‘loser’ Jimenez for his mask celebration after the game and Hornets legend Blissett, who played at Vicarage Road in three different spells for a combined total of 14 years, labelled it as ‘disrespectful’.

He then suggested the striker should consider a career change if he wants to act like a ‘cartoon character’.

Speaking on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Blissett said: â€Å“Jimenez will be disappointed and embarrassed at the fact he did that celebration. It’s disrespectful.

â€Å“Wearing masks and stuff like that – leave that to the supporters.

â€Å“You, as a player, score your goals and you celebrate with your team-mates and the supporters around you and that’s where it should start and end.

Marvin Sordell EXCLUSIVE: Burton Albion striker on accepting depression is a ‘part of his life’, a rollercoaster career and his ‘happy spot’

The phrase ‘man up’ isn’t something that sits right with Marvin Sordell when it comes to discussing mental health – especially in regards to men.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, yet still there remains a taboo among many males to discuss their emotions and feelings.

Sordell, now 28, spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at League Two outfit Northampton

Sordell, the Burton Albion striker, was one of those people who kept everything in before revealing the seriousness of his battle with depression in an interview with the Guardian last year.

While on Bolton Wanderers’ books he attempted to take his own life in August 2013 by taking an overdose of tablets. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful in doing so.

That moment of despair culminated from years of Sordell struggling with depression.

Fast forward to the current day, and Sordell has now learned to deal with his mental health problems by accepting them as a ‘part of his life’, turning to things like poetry and cooking to keep his mind at ease.

He also recently launched his own production company (180 Productions), which will give people the opportunity to tell their stories in an imaginative and captivating way.

Sordell does this through the character, Denis Prose, which represents two sides of his consciousness.

The former Watford starlet, who has contributed to State of Play, a BT Sport Film, told talkSPORT.com: “When I first spoke about my depression I wasn’t sure how it was going to be received.

“It was time I finally got some things off my chest, though, after carrying this burden around for so long, and hopefully sharing my experiences of mental health has helped other people in the same situation.

“It’s about acceptance at the end of the day. The acceptance that it’s a part of my life until the day I die.

“I know how to manage my depression now – that’s a really key thing to be in control of.”

So how does the 28-year-old feel when the ‘man up’ tag is flung about at people who are struggling with their mental health.

“My instant reaction is that they’re in a very lucky position to have never experienced any mental health problems in their life,” he explained.

“It’s difficult to understand something you can’t physically feel yourself.

“It doesn’t seem that bad when you hear about it on the surface, it’s only when you experience it first-hand you realise the impact it can make, not just on yourself but your family as well.

“It’s only then you can understand why people react in the way they do when they suffer from mental health problems.”

He continued: “We need to get these people to understand mental health is a part of life.

“Not everyone is going to suffer from deep depression, but a lot of people are going to feel up and down – and we’ve got to educate people why that is.

“Many people’s lives just continue to go in an upward trajectory emotionally, so they can’t fathom these issues that others face.

“There are people who may be in a very deep depression but pretend to be happy, when actually they’re in a suicidal place. I’ve been there after all.

“There seems to be a taboo, especially when it comes to men, about talking about your thoughts and feelings.”

Sordell, now a father of two, says he has developed his ‘real sense of identity’ away from football.

While the beautiful game is still something he holds a deep affinity for, he has found his ‘happy spot’ away from the pressures and demands of being a professional footballer.

“Becoming a father for the first time made me see the bigger picture in life,” he said.

“My second child arrived a couple of months ago too, so in terms of understanding what is really important  – becoming a dad has greatly enhanced my happiness.

“Not everyone is a parent, but everyone can find their happy spot in life, be that meditating, doing yoga, or reading.

“For me it’s great that I’ve finally managed to gain that real sense of identify outside of football.”

With that said, Sordell won’t be turning his back on the game anytime soon.

It is seven years since he sealed a dream move to the Premier League, with Bolton splashing out a reported £4m for his services from Watford.

In the summer of 2012 he was part of the Great Britain Olympic squad who ended up quarter-finalists, sharing the field with Aaron Ramsey and Ryan Giggs.

It’s safe to say Sordell’s career hasn’t hit the dizzy heights that were expected from him – but nonetheless says he’s ‘very fortune’ to have been able to fulfil his childhood dream.

“This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot over the last few years [how he’ll look back on his career when he retires],” he said.

“Have things gone differently than I expected? Of course. There is a sense of disappointment at times.

“At times you do become a bit jaded because of the situation you’re in.

“When you become accustomed to the highest level and then you go lower down the chain it does become frustrating – but that’s life.

“But if I was to go back to 15-20 years ago when my dream was to be a professional footballer, then I’ve got to be really proud of myself – I achieved my childhood dream after all.”

He added: “If you had said to me back then I’d play in the Premier League, represent Great Britain at the London Olympics, while playing with so many top players along the way – I’d have bit your hand off.

“I still love playing football – I’m desperate to maintain my love for the game. I’ve had a lot of ups and down and that does take its toll on you.

“But then I think to myself that I’ve achieved what so many youngsters dream of doing later in life, so I’m very fortunate ultimately.”

Sordell has a year left on his current deal at Burton Albion

Going into coaching after retirement is not something which interests Sordell, but says a role in player care would be an enticing one for him.

“Player care is such a huge part of the game. That’s something I’d potentially move into when I hang up my boots,” he revealed.

“It’s normally external organisations pushing it on to the clubs about the player’s wellbeing, so I’d like to think the former could be doing a bit more in terms of support for these people suffering in silence.

“I think it’s important that we drum this into youngsters from an early age the importance of this subject.

“I’ve spoken with a lot of academies, so delivering workshops and assisting in that sort of thing would definitely be of interest to me.”

The former England Under-21 starlet ends the interview by relaying a message to anyone suffering from mental health problems.

“You must reach out to someone. People aren’t mind readers at the end of the day,” he explained.

“It can be anyone, a friend or family member, or even a work colleague.

“You’ll be surprised how well that is received and how many other people are struggling with their emotions.

“I know a lot of players out there who are covering up their thoughts. They don’t want to burden other people with their problems.

However, back at Selhurst Park the 26-year-old has re-established himself as one of the Premier League’s best forwards.

That has led for calls for the Red Devils, who are set for a huge squad overhaul this summer, to re-sign the £100million rated attacker.
