Virgil van Dijk: Arsene Wenger and Rio Ferdinand critical of Liverpool defender’s ‘criminal’ mistake for Barcelona opener

Rio Ferdinand and Arsene Wenger were both critical of Virgil van Dijk, claiming he could have done more to prevent Barcelona’s opening goal against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Luis Suarez turned in Jordi Alba’s cross in the first half to put the Spanish club 1-0 up in the Champions League semi-final clash at the Nou Camp.

They went on to beat Liverpool 3-0 as Lionel Messi scored twice to put one foot in the final.

Van Dijk’s role in that Suarez’s opener was criticised by both former Arsenal manager Wenger and ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand.

Wenger told beIN Sports: “It was a half of top-quality.

“We saw a really high intensity from Liverpool. I feel they are unlucky to be 1-0 down because they are dangerous.

“Physically they are stronger than Barcelona, especially pace-wise. Barcelona made two or three yellow cards because they could not even run with Liverpool’s players.

“But when they get into the final third Barca have that quality. One chance, one goal.

“It is very interesting because Virgil van Dijk (usually) covers, but he should go with Suarez to cover that goal.

“Especially from a centre-back with that quality… he lets him go. At the start his position is not bad, but he refuses to respond.

“It’s a great goal because the cross is fantastic. For a goalscorer it is ideal. It is marvellous football.”

Ferdinand told BT Sport: “Virgil van Dijk… he’s at fault.

“He can see Suarez there, he’s pointing where he wants it. It’s not rocket science.

“He’s right in front of him – that’s your man – the no9 on the back of his shirt. Static. Virgil van Dijk there was static. It’s criminal.

“In that position he has to be Matip’s eyes and ears. He’ll be disappointed with that.”
