Yaya Toure: Manchester City legend retires from football to move into coaching

Former Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has officially announced his retirement from football.

Toure, 35, who left City at the end of the 2017/18 season, had his contract terminated by Greek side Olympiacos in December after making just two appearances.

Yaya Toure has announced his retirement from playing

His agent, Dimitri Seluk, announced the news on Twitter this morning, revealing that the ex-Ivory Coast international will now concentrate on his coaching career.

Earlier this year Toure said he had no plans to retire and was simply taking time off from football.

“No one can stop me from playing football, I just decided to take an important time off for myself and it is very important to carefully weigh the options,” Toure claimed in April.

“It’s not the end or retirement from the game because I believe I can still play on for another two or three years,” he added.

During his eight seasons with City, Toure won three Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup in 2011, where he famously ended City’s 35-year wait for silverware with winners against Manchester United and Stoke in the semi-final and final respectively.

At Barcelona, he won two LaLiga titles and the 2009 Champions League.

Toure also captured the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations playing for the Ivory Coast, and he was named the African Footballer of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Man City paid tribute to their legendary midfielder on Twitter, highlighting the trophies he won while representing the Etihad Stadium club.

They also made a little joke about the infamous birthday cake story, with City reportedly disrespecting Toure when they didn’t give him a cake to celebrate his 31st birthday back in 2014.

Travel expert reveals cheapest way for Liverpool and Tottenham fans to get to Champions League final in Madrid

Travel expert reveals cheapest way for Liverpool and Tottenham fans to get to Champions League final in Madrid

Travel expert Simon Calder has revealed how Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur fans can get to Madrid for the Champions League final as cheaply as possible.

The Reds will face Premier League rivals Spurs at the Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 for the chance to lift the famous trophy in the Spanish capital.

Liverpool fans will be heading to Madrid in their thousands

3

Liverpool fans will be heading to Madrid in their thousands

But, as a result of the extra demand, travel companies are raising their prices to exorbitant levels.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Calder explained just how much companies are looking to exploit fans.

He said: “Since last night, I’ve been following what has been happening to the fares and I must say those Liverpool fans who maybe at the start of the season had faith and bought flying out from Liverpool John Lennon on the 31st May coming back on the 2nd of June have got a real bargain.

“And they are now being paid off because they’ve got a really nice straightforward journey; maybe it’s cost them £100, £150 return?

The Merseysiders completed a remarkable comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday

3

The Merseysiders completed a remarkable comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday

“That is a fraction of what you are going to have to pay now for a far less comfortable journey.

“And, just in the past two hours, a flight I had my eye on – Ethiopia Airlines can you believe from Madrid to Dublin, early hours of Sunday morning so you can go straight from the stadium to Madrid airport, was £134 a couple of hours ago.

“The lowest price for that flight is now £500. So the options are shutting down by the minute.”

Having reached the Champions League Final in Kiev last year, Reds fans may very be well versed in all of the crafty tricks they can use to overcome the price hikes.

Tottenham players celebrate their victory at the end of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg

3

Tottenham players celebrate their victory at the end of the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg

And Calder was happy to also provide a nifty method for fans to see their team in a European final.

“My recommended option instead is to aim for Barcelona, ironically.,” he continued. “Of course, many of those fans just assumed they would be heading to Madrid on the first of June. It is a really big hub for flights and, so far, there isn’t too much of a Liverpool effect in pushing up the prices.

“So for instance, Manchester to Barcelona on the 31st of May returning on the second of June at £402 return is what it was a couple of hours ago, but it’s probably gone up since then.”

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan lives in Malaga, and recommended Spurs fans fly into the city before getting a two-hour fast train into the Spanish capital.

And Calder was happy to offer an equally useful alternative.

He added: “Actually Gatwick to Alicante is the cheapest to mainland Spain that I could find for the weekend – you’re looking at £150 return and then Alicante also has high-speed trains.”

Football: Cardiff earn first away win with late Camarasa strike at Leicester

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - A 92nd-minute goal from midfielder Victor Camarasa and a penalty save from goalkeeper Neil Etheridge ensured Cardiff City beat Leicester City 1-0 for their first away victory of the Premier League season on Saturday (Dec 29).
Claude Puel's Leicester, carrying momentum from consecutive wins against Chelsea and Manchester City, dominated the early exchanges at the King Power Stadium and came close with long-range efforts from James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira.
Leicester had their best chance of the first half in the closing stages when Jamie Vardy was slipped through by Maddison, only for the striker to shoot straight at Etheridge.
The hosts looked certain to claim consecutive home wins for the first time this season when Maddison was clipped inside the box by defender Sean Morrison but they were denied thanks to Etheridge's stunning save.
Maddison had a chance to make amends from the rebound but defender Sol Bamba dived in to turn the ball away for a corner.
With Leicester supporters heading towards the exit, Camarasa curled the ball past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from the edge of the box to secure a dramatic win for the Welsh side.
The victory takes Neil Warnock's Cardiff up to 16th place in the league standings, four points clear of the relegation zone.
Etheridge, who will miss the Philippines' Asian Cup campaign to help Cardiff's top-flight survival bid, said the result should lift the spirits in the dressing room during the second half of the season.
"It was a great save to help the team but the main thing for us today is the great win - our first away from home," the 28-year-old said.
"It gives us momentum going into the new year.
"We just need to keep focusing and keep concentrating. Obviously, it's a very tough league. To keep two clean sheets in a row is outstanding. The boys have done very well.
"We take every game as it comes. We've got a tough game against Tottenham on New Year's Day but we'll enjoy this one for now."
Leicester slipped to eighth spot after failing to capitalise on almost two-thirds of ball possession and 16 attempts on goal.

He played 45 league games, just missing one match due to the birth of his son, and kept 18 clean sheets – the third best in the league behind Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson (21) and Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph (19).

Butland was recently named in England’s 23-man squad for next months’ UEFA Nations League finals – one of only two players who do not currently play in England’s top flight (the other being Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho).

And the young goalkeeper has told talkSPORT he ‘needs’ to move back to the Premier League to ensure his long-term future in the Three Lions team.

Speaking to Drivetime from St George’s Park on Tuesday, Butland said: “I always have and I always will give everything for Stoke City, but I need to be in the Premier League.

“I’ve tried to help the club back there but I know where I need to be to be in this [England] squad.
