Tony Cascarino has set the record straight after Dean Saunders’ bold claim that former club Aston Villa are ‘bigger than Chelsea’.
Cascarino, who played for both clubs, agrees the West Midlands side have a rich history but in reality they are now ‘miles behind’ the London giants.

Villa will be back in the Premier League next season, having ended their three-year stay in the Championship by beating Derby County in the play-off final last month.
And Saunders unwittingly found himself trending on social media after he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast:
“The owner of Chelsea has got more money than Villa, so he has made Chelsea into a big club. But actually, traditionally, Aston Villa are a bigger club than Chelsea if you go back over the years. They’re a massive club, they’ve won everything.”

The Welshman’s comments sparked a huge reaction online, with Villa fans hailing him as a legend while Blues and neutral supporters thought he’d lost the plot.
Not all with Villa allegiances agreed, though, with Carscarino and fellow former claret and blue striker Darren Bent both insisting Chelsea have eclipsed the 1982 European Cup winners.
Cascarino told talkSPORT on Thursday: “The answer is obviously difficult because in different periods one club has been bigger than the other.
“But, if you’re looking at the last decade, Villa are miles behind Chelsea.

Villa are the fifth most successful club in English football, but Chelsea – crowned Europa League champions last week – are the fourth with four more major trophies in their cabinet
“If you want take it back further, Andy Townsend left Chelsea to go to Villa in the early 90s, that’s when Villa were a very strong club and they were even stronger in the early 80s when they were European Champions.
“When I joined Villa, I knew I had joined a big club. I loved being there, I wore the number 9 shirt Peter With had worn and wore it with great pride.
“Of course Villa was a huge club at that particular time, but if we’re talking about the last decade – no.”
Ex-Villa striker Darren Bent added: “Yeah I agree.

“Villa are obviously a massive club, but if you talk about right now you’ve got to say Chelsea.
“They won the Champions League not that long ago, they’re always winning trophies and have won Premier Leagues.
“It’s not like the Manchester United/Manchester City situation where United are a bigger club because their history is still quite recent, but Aston Villa’s [success] was a while ago compared to what Chelsea are doing now.
“You’ve got to be honest and right now I think everyone would say Chelsea.”
