Wolves have enjoyed a superb return to the Premier League.
The Wanderers have secured seventh place and should Watford fail to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final, they will be playing in the Europa League next season.

Wolves have had a magnificent return to the Premier League
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men smashed their previous Premier League points record (40) with nine matches remaining – since 2001, no newly-promoted club has finished in a higher position than 8th.
And now, as the season edges towards it conclusion, many are suggesting the Molineux chief should be crowned manager of the year.
In light of Wolves’ stellar campaign, talkSPORT.com has taken a look at other teams who have endured similarly brilliant returns to the Premier League since it started in 1992.

Blackburn 1992/93

Shearer was Blackburn’s star performer in this season

Final position: 4th
Manager: Kevin Dalglish
Blackburn were promoted to the Premier League for its inaugural season and it proved to be a brilliant campaign for the blue and white outfit.
Owner Jack Walker splashed the cash in the summer, signing Alan Shearer for £3.5m, who went onto score 16 goals in 21 matches before his season was ended with a knee injury.
Newcastle 1993/94

Keegan led Newcastle to a brilliant third place finish

Manager: Kevin Keegan
Final position: 3rd
Newcastle enjoyed such a good return to the top-flight they were given the nickname ‘The Entertainers’ for their blistering football.
Kevin Keegan’s side were a major force in the early days of the Premier League, with Andy Cole prolifically leading the line to score 34 goals in 40 matches.
Nottingham Forest 1994/95

Collymore shone for Forest throughout this campaign
Total points: 77
Manager Frank Clark
Final position: 3rd
This season by Forest is still the joint-best ever season by a newly promoted club and it has been for 23 years.
Stan Collymore scored 22 goals as the Reds qualified for the UEFA Cup, he then moved to Liverpool the following summer and Forest haven’t discovered the same dizzy heights since.
Sunderland 1999/00

Phillips had a sensational season for the Black Cats
Total points: 58
Manager: Peter Reid
Final position: 7th
Kevin Phillips scored an astonishing 30 goals in his first season in the top-flight and claimed the European Golden Shoe as the Black Cats secured a seventh place finish in the Premier League.
Reid’s men were unfortunate to miss out on European football, with their goal difference not good enough to qualify for the UEFA cup.
Charlton 2000/01

Curbishley led Charlton to a great return in the top-flight
Total points: 52
Manager: Alan Curbishley
Final position: 9th
Charlton were relegated in 1999/00 season and Curbishley managed to bring them straight back up to the top-flight.
He defied expectations by guiding them to ninth place and had there defence been more solid they could have qualified for Europe.
Ipswich 2000/01

Not many predicted Ipswich to have the season they did
Total points: 66
Manager: George Burley
Final position: 5th
The Tractor Boys were tipped for the drop after coming up through the play-off’s and they extraordinarily finished in fifth place.
However, the next season they were relegated after most of their squad was poached by the big boys.
Manchester City 2002/03

Anelka scored 14 goals to help City to a ninth place finish
Total points: 51
Manager: Kevin Keegan
Final position: 9th
Keegan guided Man City back to the top tier in 2002 and they have remained there since.
The now super-rich club were then spearheaded by Nicolas Anelka, who was bought for the big money fee of £13million, and his 14 goals helped them to finish ninth.
West Ham 2005/06

Benayoun was a star performer for West Ham on their return to the Premier League

Final position: 9th
The Hammers scraped their way to the Premier League through the play-offs and many largely expected them to go straight back down.
However, at the end of October they were fourth and enjoying a superb season. They might have won an FA Cup too if it wasn’t for some heroics from Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.
Reading – 2006/07

Final position: 8th
Reading have had three seasons in the Premier League and in two of them they were relegated.
However, the Royals performed brilliantly with Steve Sidwell starring throughout to finish in eighth place – and they would have qualified for Europe had they not drawn their last match.
